Fun with Sulfa Drugs

It seems Lana is allergic to the Septra she was prescribed for her raging bladder infection. The smallish, roundish, non-uniform raised welts started yesterday. They have now spread to most of her little body. I paged our doctor this morning and described the rash, and he said it sounded like a classic non-anaphalatic (sp?) reaction to sulfa drugs. I inquired if it was possible for this to happen five days after we began treatment, and he was responded that was typical, evidently, unlike hives which would occur much more quickly.

So...lovely. We had lousy sleep again last night, but, probably because the poor child was itchy. She may also be experiencing lower back pain and mouth pain and joint pain. Not that she could tell us that...

Tired,
Gretchen

I'm so sorry, I hope she is better soon. Sulfa is an extremely common allergy.

oh, poor Lana. Thank goodness it was a non-anaphalatic reaction though!!
Chalk up one "known" allergy. (I always feel weird responding "I don't know" when people ask about Zeeb's allergies.)

Poor little baby. I hope her infection clears up soon. UTI's are the worst. Sometimes the treatments cause even more problems, like allergic reactions and the dreaded yeast infection. (Not the most pleasant thing to talk about, I know.) Cranberry juice can also help clear up UTI's. I personally hate the taste of it, but it does help.

Oh bummer. Hope she feels better soon. You all have had such a few long weeks. How are she and Gabe getting along? Is she picking up the language a bit?

Let us know if we can help in any way. Or if you just want a visit.

I have a sulfa allergy, not sure if they gave steroids to recover, makes sure she has a snack. It bottoms out my blood sugar, I guess that's not uncommon. BTW Neosporin has sulfa in it I think. There's lots more antibiotics out there for the future, so no worries there.

Dear Gretchen, If Lan isn't too crazy about cranberry juice, mix it with 1/2 calorie tropicana orange juice which tastes a lot like tang but is healthier. 100 % cranberry juice is better than the cranberry cocktail which doesn't have as much cranberry in it. The orange cranberry mix is better tasting as well imo. Over all you will be getting less sugar
